Crazy Horse Ride Up Mount Bromo In East Java

I’m a lover and frequent traveler to Indonesia. Maybe it’s due to the Indonesian blood in me, or perhaps of my good Indonesian buddies. My favourite part of Indonesia is located at East Java, in this quiet town called Malang. It is just 2 hours drive up from the Surabaya International Airport.

I have been to Malang five times since mid 2006 and that is almost one to two trips in a year. In case you are wondering, the trip is not costly at all. You can book yourself a return trip for a mere S$180, and you are on your way into the scenic and wildlife places in Malang. The cool and fresh air in Malang is what I really like too!

Happy lama posing... say "cheeeze!"Happy smiley bear, welcoming me in the car... upclose and personal with the handsome...

Malang is a highland area, and the best time to visit the place is between July to August when temperature is at its lowest. My local friends are usually my tour guides, taking me to exotic places such as world-famous Mount Bromo.

I love the street side food, especially the Nasi Goereng, Rawon, Black Soup and Soto Ayam. For just less than S$2, you can get a meal of equivalent standard to a 5-star hotel cafe in Singapore. It’s truly incredible!

Let me share with you more about Mount Bromo!  I left home at 2am to take a two and a half hours journey up the mountain. When I reached the peak, it was 4.30am and the sky was still dark with a temperature of minus 10 degrees! However, the skies were filled with millions of stars, absolutely the most romantic place I’ve ever been to.

Mount BromoAs real to the naked eyes as in this picture...

By 5am, the first rays of light awoke the brand new day. Outlines of the sea sand became more distinct. Mount Bromo seemed so magical under the light rays, colorful and glittering. This Mount Bromo photo is as real as what your naked eyes would see over there.

After catching the sunrise, I  then took the jeep down to the sea sand and entrusted my life to a horse which carried me up right into to the crater of the volcano. The horse-ride experience was really scary because when I was riding the horse, I could see that its feet were  just inches away from the cliff of the rocky slopes. All I could do was to pray and hang on to the horse for my dear life!

The view from the crater was simply breathtaking. And as Mount Bromo is still an active volcano we can actually still see gases coming out from the crater, and not to mention the smell of sulfur is so overpowering!

Apart  from Mount Bromo,  I also visited apple plantations and picked my own apples to eat. I mean how many of us actually get to pick the apples right of the trees?

Next up, I also visited Taman Safari Zoo for drive through to have close up encounters with the lions, tigers and other wild animals. The best part? I have the opportunity to carry little cubs for photo sessions!

The conclusion? I may be going back again in August this year!  There is just so much more to tell about the beautiful and peaceful town.

If your next destination is Malang, just drop me a message and I will be glad to tell you more about this beautiful place.

    Hi Jean

Wow I really hope I can see those beautiful scenaries you describe by my very own eyes.

When would you be going Malang again? Roughly how much should I budget for my flight, accomodation and food for the stay? How many days stay at Malang?

    Hi Hwee Ping,

I’m going back to Malang again this August… the round ticket to Malang costs less than $200 via Jetstar.. accomodation is free for me as i’m always well taken care of by my friends or they would arrange driver for me.. I brought my family there in January… did not cost me much.. the food is really good n cheap too as in Rupiah… shopping is really cheap, like less than $8 for a nice T shirt.

If you plan to go Malang, can also drop by Surabaya… i stayed at Sheraton Towers, quite reasonable for a 5 star hotel.. even met Pst Kong der! haha… Surabaya is a gd place to shop.

You must definitely drop by the Taman Safari… its a MUST!
You can also stay at Mount Bromo resorts.. but its really freezing cold up there.. hehe…

Or…. you can come along with me in August.. haha!
